Description:
The main characters are Virginia Woolf (Sussex, England, 1923), Laura Brown (Los Angles, 1949), Clarissa Vaughn (late 20th century, New York City). This novel won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was later made into an Oscar-winning 2002 movie (starring Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep). The book follows three women through one day in their lives and concerns three generations affected by Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway. The three female protagonists, and the three symbiotic storylines that they appear in, represent different aspects of the same soul.
Reading is an excellent way to expand your knowledge of a language, and we’ll also read out loud and work on our pronunciation when we meet. What better way to improve your speaking, pronunciation, and understanding of a foreign language than through books!
This ten-week course will be guided by a mother tongue English language instructor and will meet every Thursday from 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm to share relevant passages of the book together in class, to discuss idioms, which is one of the ways in which reading helps us improve our knowledge of a language, to assist in perfecting pronunciation, and to discuss themes and characters all in English! Along with reading and discussing the book we’ll also view the film (The Hours) on the last meeting.
So whether your goal is to improve or simply to practice your English, this course will help you, and you don’t have to be a literature enthusiast — you just have to find the time to read this book and to come to class as often as possible in order to discuss it!
